ValueAct Capital
ValueAct Capital was founded in San Francisco in 2000 and has established itself as one of the most influential activist investors in technology and healthcare. Led by Mason Morfit, who succeeded founder Jeff Ubben as CEO, ValueAct takes a collaborative rather than adversarial approach to activism — seeking board representation and working quietly with management teams rather than waging noisy public campaigns. This approach has made ValueAct a trusted partner to many management teams and boards.
ValueAct typically holds 5–10 large positions and regularly secures board seats, which gives it an unusual level of insight and influence over portfolio companies. The fund has been an investor in companies including Microsoft, Seagate, Adobe, Rolls-Royce, and Willis Towers Watson. Jeff Ubben, who ran ValueAct from 2000 to 2020, later founded Inclusive Capital Partners with a focus on ESG-driven activist investing. Under Morfit, ValueAct has maintained its technology focus while expanding into European situations.
We look for great businesses at inflection points — where the underlying business is sound but strategy, capital allocation, or management execution has fallen behind the opportunity.
